Volunteering whilst on benefits

People who are getting State benefits, can be volunteers and, in nearly all cases, benefits will not be affected. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) publication 'Volunteering while getting benefits' provides information for volunteers and Voluntary Services Managers and can be downloaded below. Staff at Job Centre Plus have not always been familiar with the regulations governing volunteering while getting benefits, which has resulted in conflicting or incorrect advice being given to individuals. Following contact from NAVSM members regarding some concerns they had about this, Carol Rawlings, Chair of NAVSM, wrote to Robert Devereux, Permanent Secretary at the DWP to ask for his help to ensure that staff were conversant with the regulations. You can read Robert Devereux's response below and download it to use in any discussions with Job Centre Plus staff.
